Abstract:

In this presentation, I will outline my transition from a long-standing career in humanoid robotics to the healthcare sector. I will provide a detailed examination of how advancements in humanoid robot sensing, locomotion, and manipulation can be effectively integrated into healthcare settings. Additionally, I will present various use cases that illustrate how these technological advancements have enabled numerous successful deployments within the healthcare environment.

Gordon Cheng has made pioneering contributions to Humanoid Robotics, Neuroengineering, and Artificial Intelligence for over 20 years. Since 2010, he has been a Chair Professor for Cognitive Systems. He serves as the Director of the Institute for Cognitive Systems at the Technical University of Munich in Germany. Prof. Cheng is also the Program Director of the Elite Master of Science in Neuroengineering, a highly selective and unique study program within the Elite Network of Bavaria. Additionally, he coordinates the Center of Competence in Neuro-Engineering.
Gordon Cheng is a co-inventor of 20 patents and has co-authored over 450 technical publications, proceedings, editorials, books, and book chapters. In recognition of his interdisciplinary work, he was named an IEEE Fellow in 2017 for his contributions to "humanoid robotic systems and neurorobotics". In 2024, he was honored with the RSJ Fellowship for his contributions to "robotics science and technology". He is the recipient of the prestigious ERC Advanced Grants (in 2023) to undertake work in “Soft-exoskeleton suit To Restore Autonomous Locomotion.” His research interests encompass NeuroRobotics, Humanoid Robotics, Imitation Learning, Cognitive Systems, Artificial Intelligence, and Neuroengineering.
